September 22, 2010 | The Government's New Energy Concept: Nuclear vs. Renewable Energy

Editorial Team: The most important political event in September was the German Government’s publication of its “revolutionary” energy program draft. The plan intends to set the tone for German energy policy up to the year 2050. The controversial extension of running times for nuclear power plants aims at preserving nuclear energy as a bridging technology, paving the way for the full-scale deployment of renewables. The goal is to eventually have green technologies provide for up to 80 percent of Germany’s energy needs. The “energy concept” is key to Germany’s international competitiveness and profoundly affects the country’s global leadership in the sphere of renewable energy.

face of this large sum, the political attention it attracts and the sustained
efforts required to manage the crisis, the current Congress will have

November 27, 2008 | Obama Must Rekindle Climate Debate

The US elected a president to meet the challenge of climate change. ++ Obama has chosen energy experts and supporters of cap-and-trade programs for his cabinet. ++ By 2050 he intends to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80%. ++ He wants to create jobs and cheap energy through investment in renewable and “clean coal” energy. ++ This is a more optimistic message than what is heard from the rest of

July 24, 2008 | "The Good News About Energy"

The tendency to use cleaner, lower carbon fuels is gathering speed without mandates or subsidies. ++ Indeed, the necessity to adapt infrastructure and emerging economies’ use of whatever their indigenous resources to industrialize means the process will not be quick or smooth; but change is underway. ++ China and India, for instance, still heavily rely on coal, but in the long term, they plan to
